It must be true—it’s Baskerville

December 15, 2012

Here’s a factoid for my fellow typography geeks. Inspired by the account of a college student who could allegedly raise his grade by using serif fonts over sans serif fonts, New York Times columnist Errol Morris conducted his own experiment using his readers as guinea pigs. The story is here and I won’t give away the conclusion, but suffice to say, if you want to establish cred among your […]

Note to self: There’s not only enough, but a lot more where that came from

December 1, 2012

Occasionally I need to make visual reminders of ideas I don’t naturally embrace, because in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I still doubt there will ever be enough. Enough time, money, ideas, clients. Even after 11 years of playing in the sandbox and getting paid for it, I remain unconvinced that the whole idea of “universal abundance” isn’t just the purview of idol, western, affluent navel-gazers who’ve […]

Illustration (Last) Friday: Zoom

Okay so I’m a week late with my Illustration Friday entry. Blame the day job, Thanksgiving, Obamacare. Anyway, here it is.

Happy Thanksgiving

November 21, 2012

I wanted to find an uplifting, “glass-half-full” quote for Thanksgiving and this is what rose to the top of the list, thanks to Teri Guillemets at Quote Garden.

Member Directory Cover Design

November 15, 2012

I find myself using more and more hand lettering in client work these days. (I even bought myself a drafting table!). This is a proposed cover design for the San Francisco Professional Food Society Membership Directory. It’s 98% hand lettered and drawn and uses a technique I borrowed from Mary Kate McDevitt that uses Illustrator to edit scanned lettering instead of Photoshop (my usual route). I do like the […]

Do Not Take Anything for Granted…

November 12, 2012

A lovely quote I though appropriate for those of us on the un-storm ravaged left side of the country (in this case, I mean that geographically). Credit goes to the author Terri Guillemets of The Quote Garden.

Illustration Friday: Shy

November 5, 2012

This week’s topic conjured leftover emotions from watching the second part of the documentary “Half The Sky”. And although the issues raised in the book/documentary have nothing directly to do with this topic, per se, one of the themes resonated—namely the chrysalis of sorts that resides in every repressed person, whether from without or within, and the vast potential and empowerment that often goes un-realized because of it.

When the Winds of Change Blow…

November 1, 2012

“When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, others build windmills.” I guess this is the Chinese equivalent of “When life gives you lemons…” but I think this is much more poignant.

Illustration Friday: Haunted

October 27, 2012

You know that reoccurring nightmare we all have where we’re minding our business and suddenly off in the distance a body falls from the sky? Or a 747? Or an armadillo? No? That’s just me? …kay. Anyway…it’s a common theme in my nightmare repertoire, usually accompanied by abject panic and an obsessive need to grab my camera gear and rush to the scene to photograph the carnage (I used […]

Just because it’s the Zombie Apocalypse doesn’t mean there aren’t decent design jobs

October 21, 2012

Not sure what it says about the state of the economy but I just launched my first campaign for a new product to help consumers stock up for the Zombie Apocalypse. It’s called Zom-B-Gone, a Zombie Repellant offered by one of our clients, Birdy Botanicals. Anyway, it was big fun doing the 95% hand-lettered label, infographic, Facebook timeline, blog post, website product images, etc. I’d say it was a […]
