I find myself using more and more hand lettering in client work these days. (I even bought myself a drafting table!).
This is a proposed cover design for the San Francisco Professional Food Society Membership Directory. It’s 98% hand lettered and drawn and uses a technique I borrowed from Mary Kate McDevitt that uses Illustrator to edit scanned lettering instead of Photoshop (my usual route). I do like the edge definition at 600 dpi with live trace and I like what Illustrator did to the counters—the little pops of white kinda work. I can definitely see advantages to using each technique, depending on the nature of the piece. In this case, the base file was created in Photoshop with the main text layer brought in from Illustrator.
